Is it legal to install solar panels on the roof?

Without a doubt, the answer is yes! In fact, it has always been legal, but now with the current regulation (Royal Decree 244/2019, of self-consumption), it is much simpler than before since administrative procedures have been significantly reduced and in addition, economic barriers have been removed, such as the obligation to install a generation meter for an individual installation. More information here.

In addition, the new regulation makes it possible to take advantage of the surplus energy in a simple way, significantly reducing the payback period. You can check here for more information on the compensation of surpluses that we already offer in Holaluz.

Likewise, the European regulations, through the Directives package called Clean Energy Package that comes into force in 2021, imposes obligations on the member states regarding self-consumption, the most significant being:

  • Prohibition of establishing charges for self-consumed energy (what we knew as "sun tax")
  • Simplified authorization procedures for small power installations
  • Mechanisms that allow for the recovery of surplus energy

All of this gives us security regarding the current self-consumption regulation in Spain.
